Would the mainframe exist if prices had not been driven down by PCM's (software and hardware) to the point that they compete well with other technologies?
On the other hand how crucial was Linux in driving demand for Ascii servers? What would M$ charge if they had competition only from non-generic Unix and proprietary opsys? What would have been the success of Intel if AMD had not driven down the price/performance curve? Even more ironically, what would the state of AMD be today if they did not have access to the IBM foundry and other technology? Over my 4.5 decades the sideshow has been part of the attraction to the circus.
