Pet peeve. Saying mainframes versus servers is like saying Fords versus

My pet peeve is the tendancy of some of the unwashed masses to refer to
Wintel and/or *IX systems as "open systems" versus "mainframes." Seems they
are ignorant of the support of the myriad of open standards that the
mainframe provides. When it makes sense, I attempt to correct them, but it
often is just a waste of breath...
Which is why I tried to get IBM to recognize the need for
an ad campaign to win the hearts and minds of the coders
and IT managers. But I was rebuffed.
Has anyone ever seen an IBM ad campaign that would cause
anyone to go out and buy an IBM product or service? The
three most recent campaigns I've been aware of are: the
ones with various IT folks with boxing gloves on - really
ugly pictures with no real message; the "Take Back Control"
- which are really stupid and tacky; and the current
"Special" - which is totally vacant of impact.
I suggested some scripts and scenarios but was told
my services weren't needed, thanks.
