Few thoughts:
1. The most expensive software is not protected by any key. I mean z/OS, DB2,
CICS, IMS and all the IBM code. Some code is even delivered to you without
payment, look at IFAPRDxx.
2. Sometimes the keys expire without any warning, it can happen because there's
no warning in the product, or the product is not used day by day. Such surprise
usually occur according to Murphy's law.
3. IMHO vendors should provide new key in advance, before the current one
expires. They should take care about it! (assumed the payments are done).
4. Sometimes the product requires restart to enter new keys. It can be product
restart, LNKLST update, or CICS regions restart. The last one is equal to
production downtime.
5. DR. Although most vendors provide the key for DR machine, those keys cannot be entered
in advance. I would like to have both keys in "key member", so the product
would restart in my DR center without any special procedure.
