I am the first one to admit that IBM has made some monumental blunders
vis-a-vis mainframes and the market place. But to state that they are
deliberately and intentionally doing anything to harm the market is ludicrous.
The fight with PSI is all about whether or not the platform that runs z/OS will
be dictated by IBM or someone else. Whether or not that hardware market is a
specialty market, or a commodity market. With respect to FLEX, don't you think
IBM looks a lot more convincing if it goes into court without any relationship
to any segment of a market they say is illegal? If PSI wins, and IBM is forced
to license z/OS on any platform, who is going to be driving the train? Someone
has to. In my opinion, what will kill the mainframe is if the market becomes a
commodities market where anyone can buy a $500 pc and get a license to run
z/OS.
It is surely true that IBM has been asleep at the throttle on a number of
issues. We can all put or .02 into what they could do better. But to state
that IBM is deliberately trying to kill the mainframe market indicates to me
that the individual making that statement may have his head stuck in a dark
spot on his body.
