Admittedly those prices are still higher than some folks want to see. I personally know of an existing customer and long time mainframe shop that turned down a considerably discounted (by 70%) z9 for an outsourcing scenario. It is not to say that there may have been other factors that came to play there, but I expect that if the pricing had been 'sweeter' they would still be a System z shop (and a MUCH larger one at that).
One fact that you have in error, for some time now the price of z/VM is more in the 22.5K range. The more engines you buy for the lower the price per engine gets. Gibney, Dave wrote:
