Before I downloaded directly to z/OS, I was doing something similar. I would download to the PC. Then I would FTP to an HFS directory called /smpe/eso. Next I would run GIMUNZIP unpack the SMPHOLD and SMPPTFIN files. After GIMUNZIP had run and I had received the maintenance, I would delete the files in the HFS until the next time I needed to FTP to z/OS.
