I agree; TRANSMIT is a great way to pack a PDS into a sequential file. But
when it comes to transferring files to or from a PC, whether they are
sequential (including transmit format) or individual members of a PDS, I
much prefer the ISPF Workstation Agent (WSA.EXE) over FTP or IND$FILE.
To manipulate z/OS files on my workstation, I use NFS client on the
workstation and NFS server on z/OS. To manipulate workstation files
on z/OS, I use NFS client on z/OS and a common NFS server. It appears
that NFS is generally available for a wider range of platforms than WSA.
I believe some of my colleagues do similarly with Samba. I perceive
that TRANSMIT used in conjunction with either FTP or IND$FILE lacks the
spontaneity of NFS. So, what are the respective merits of:
WSA?
I don't know any. In fact I used it only few times, just for testing.
NFS?
Requires some additional setup, additional software on PC, which can be
non-free.
Samba?
I'd suggest DFS/SMB. I like it. It is great for HFS file sharing and -
in some cases - acceptable for dataset sharing.
BTW: I really *like* to show mainframers how to edit VSAM KSDS - in
Windows Notepad.
