Danial,
 
  If you don't defrag or otherwise create free space on ML1, you will 
experience B-37s during Primary Space Management. Having that happen could then 
effect available space on your Primary volumes making your users unhappy. 
Reason enough?
 
My own preference is to issue a Freevol command against the ML1 with the most 
free space exts. This way I get a completely empty volume for space management 
to play with.

  Thanks for the headsup on levels. I think the storage admin is checking that
now. In a former shop we didn't compress ML1 volumes, and why it's done
here is lost in history as folks have left, hence the question of why do it at 
all.
