The QMF V8.1 Program Directory says that GDDM base is a
"Mandatory Operational Requisite". By that I understand that you could
theoretically install QMF without having GDDM base available, but you couldn't
use QMF without GDDM. I believe that QMF uses GDDM to display text on the
3270 screen -- in other words QMF does not use TSO screen services
directly. QMF can also use GDDM for printing.

However this all rather academic since GDDM base was included in OS/390 and
remains part of z/OS. And it does not cost anything extra. So every z/OS
installation will have GDDM available whether or not they use it.

On the other hand if you want to use the charting facilities of QMF (ICU) you
will need to pay for GDDM-PGF as an extra feature. From my reading of the
QMF documentation I believe this is optional.
