Hello Andy, As you surmise, IPL and NIP message processing happens on the HMC...one machine does both....no need to go find the other console for NIP messages. (our IODF has empty NIPCONs lists).
Since we are sysplexed, we usually IPL a system into an active sysplex, and once MVS gets up far enough, the messages appear on the other systems SMCS console. So replying to any MVS message is easy, no need to fuss on HMC. there are previous posts on setting up CONSOLxx member for HMC support in the archives.
