Hello All,

This is my first post on IBM MAIN. I had asked this question at SHARE
but was not very clear. May be this will work.

Thanks in advance.

Current Procedure:

1) Currently users can archive their data by submitting a job to copy
their data onto a 3490 tape with an expiration date of 33xxx where
xxx=no of months they want to archive.

2) We have coded EDGUX100 exit to create a dataset Management value of
say PERM for all datasets created with an expiration date of 33xxx. It
also calculates the appropriate expiration date.

3) We have set a RMM VRS rule to send any dataset with MGT value=PERM to
offsite until they expire.

4) The above turns the transit flag=Y in RMM and based on that we
determine the list of tapes going and coming from offsite.

The above procedure has been in effect for the last 20 years and over
the time we have accumulated about 40,000 3490 tapes and some tapes with
no drives. The above process is getting expensive and will not be cost
effective if we go to a higher density tapes for small datasets. I am
looking for a solution that would address the following problems.

1) We are looking to consolidate the existing tapes onto higher density
tapes.

2) Create duplex copies and also 'recycle' them as files on the tapes
expire.

3) Be able to manage stacking so that datasets with similar expiration
date end up on one tape.

4) Based on the "Life of a Tape" recycle the tapes.

I am wondering how other shops are addressing this scenario and is there
a way to manage this via HSM/RMM? Also are they any 3rd party products
that would do the above?

Thanks,
