I have to admit embarrassment at completely missing this JCL mechanism. On the other hand, like many installations we have an RYO command-issuing program that--because it's a job step--spits out commands in 'JCL sequence' and can be paused out as well in between. Still, I should have known about this puppy. ;-(

I find them pretty useless anyway.
You can't guarantee the timing, and basically are out of your control.
Same applies to the in-stream commands.
