Agreed, unless you shut down z/OS first, then powered off the array and performed a cold-start. After that, you could power the array back up and vary the drive(s) online, couldn't you?
Granted, it's been a few (hundred) years since I've been a console operator, but I do remember in the olden days (when dinosaurs roamed the 3330 packs) if we got stuck with a consistent(ly annoying) hardware problem, we'd pull that old trick.
