I seem to remember that the "belt and braces" approach was to make sure you had a clear, uncluttered screen.

So back to the OP and guessing that he may have been trying to use
IND$FILE for a transfer via 3270 emulation while sitting at ISPF
option 6....   Some of those emulators only work when you use the
transfer function from TSO READY, so you have to exit ISPF and be
at the READY prompt ...er ... TSO command shell prompt.  ;-)
