Oops, correction to the statement below.  We installed the 2096, then
went 64 bit, and then installed z/OS 1.7.  You can't run z/OS 1.7 in 31
bit mode.  Still, as far as I know there were no problems at any step
along the way.

We converted from a 9672 to a 2096 last year.  When we first converted
we were on z/OS 1.4 then we put on z/OS 1.7 then move from 31 to 64 bit
processing.  I'm the capacity planner, not the system programmer, but as
far as I know we had no problems at any point along the way.
