and John, In a Parallel Sysplex VTAM and TCPIP are always UP! So there is ALWAYS an available SMCS console when you IPL. Yes, I do agree that in a single image system that SMCS is not ideal, but isn't parallel sysplex what we all should be aiming for to ensure the future of z/OS? At the least you could have 2 images active in plex on a single box.
