So, even if I double the speed of the CPU, I have improved these
long running jobs by one minute.

Agreed. in the same area I have seen applications half in execution
time just by increasing (# of) buffers . The same is with CPU time
while I have not seen drastic differences I have seen it cut buy 1/3
with minimal program rewrite. Doubling the channel speed does you no
good unless that is the bottle neck just like doubling the cpu speed
does not (necessarily) get your job done in half the time.
