We got rid of old cartridges by having them destroyed (burnt) by a
company specialized in secure destruction. Our auditors could follow the
cartridges all the way until they (the cart's -;)) were thrown into the
oven.

We degaused some 5000 cartridges years ago before selling them to a
broker as used cartridges. Degausing erases the data, including the
label, so the tapes must be reinitialized but that is all.
