Hi Herbie,

I'm glad to hear that Ireland is going green. Greener?
Of course staying on the mainframe is another excellent green tactic...

We have done many projects which address both safety as in security and as
in eco friendly. Our partner Imation (cartridge manufacturer) offers a Secure
Media Destruction Service. This involves transportation of the media to a
special incinerator that has waste-to-energy capability. Incineration takes
good care of any security concerns; the special incinerator is the best known
eco friendly solution. An optional step that companies are taking more
frequently is on-site degaussing of the cartridges before transportation to the
secure destruction facility. If you do your own degaussing, be aware that
there are different models of degaussers depending on the media to be
processed. BTW the destruction cost is a small component of price, compared
to degaussing service.

The above is how it's done in Canada and U.S. If you need a local contact for
this service in your country, you can send me a note.

Regarding the seller taking them back at no charge, yes the whole world would
behave differently if entire lifecycle cost were included in the purchase
price.
Although I agree with you, there are some up-sides to the status quo, for
example if one purchased 3590's from EMTEC, the company is no longer
around to dispose of them for you.
