I don't know if this is simpler or not. I think that if you save this txt
file as
somename.HTA and open it using MS IE:
    http://members.tripod.com/billlalonde/misc/clip.txt
then, the imbedded script removes trailing blanks from lines in the 
clipboard when you click the button.
