Well I guess it depends where you read, I read this (p12):

The WebSphere Application Server Plugin
Many customers use the IBM HTTP Server as a front end to their WebSphere
Application Server
applications. The WebSphere Application Server Plugin provide a means of
letting the IBM HTTP
Server instance know all the applications that are running within WAS
and how to access them.
The WebSphere Application Server Plugin that is written to run inside
the HTTP Server for z/OS
Powered by Apache is provided as part of the Optional Materials of
WebSphere Application Server.
A complete set of instructions for installing the WebSphere Plugin for
the HTTP Server Powered by
Apache can be found by following the link below:

   Hi Henrik,

Here's a snippet from the .pdf linked to the url provided by Rob:

Quick Overview of the IBM HTTP Server for z/OS Powered by Apache
Packaging and delivery Delivered as a feature of WebSphere Application
Server for z/OS
"Optional Materials."
FMID JIWO610, Component ID: 5655I3510
APAR fix that introduced function to JIWO610: PK34887
APAR/PTF table for the "Optional Materials":
ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=404&uid=swg27009131

So, if I don't have WAS, can I still get the new HTTP server? Or
must I use the old "domino" HTTP server?

Thanks!
Bob Lester
