I was once on a contract where the manager of the government side would randomly designate someone on the DR team as dead. He'd also randomly pull a tape from the backup set. Such techniques can help to shake out a weak recovery plan.

We did that a Clearing as well. We did one test where the entire Systems staff, and first-shift Operations, were all declared dead. The results were a serious eye-opener; management suddenly realized just how dependant they were vis-a-vis certain staff members. Cross training suddenly became a LOT more important, along with skill-sharing and problem recognition and resolution.
