Sometimes the reasoning for more frequent IPLs is just to keep operations staff properly familiar with the process and procedure. While I like to think of z/OS as not needing an IPL, there are situations that demand it.
Of course YMMV. Since it never seems that any 2 z/OS shops run the same... there is always something different. Know that the platform and OS are set to do amazing things, however a bit of prudent operational planning can always assist when "Murphy" knocks at the door.
