I used it for providing usage information for applications (I was
applications technical support for a Y2K project).  At a shop prior to
that, the customer master file for billing and marketing, the product
file and the open account file had bit switches so the USAGE BIT would
definitely have come in handy.  Having true IEEE floating point would
eliminate the conversion between hex and IEEE floating point when
COBOL interfaces with Java.  I also doubt that IBM pushed decimal
floating point for non business purposes.
