No. In the current HCD, you can create any number of "placeholder" entries
for future LPARs. They will have an LPAR name of "*". If you need a new
LPAR, then you just change the * to the real name, assign I/O resources,
then do a hardware activate. You would now see your new LPAR on the HMC and
you can customize the profile for it.
But you do need to have enough unassigned memory, otherwise you might need
to take down a system, change its profile to decrease its memory, reactivate
the LPAR and reIPL. Do this as many times are necessary to get the amount of
memory you need. Then give that memory to the new LPAR.
Yes. Reserved LPARs. Actually I never used this feature (it is available
since z/OS 1.6 AFAIK), however I don't understand it.
In my understanding I always had the feature: it is enough to create
LPARs, assign (or not) some CHPids, assign some memory and voila.
If don't want to have memory assigned for "dummy" LPAR it is enough to
keep the LPAR uninitialized (do not activate it).
The only difference I can see is fixed LPAR name, a priori chosen (but
who cares?).
Did I miss something? Please, enlighten me.
