You don't need to run z/OS on VM. This is an option, IMHO rarely used in
"serious" production.
Resource sharing? Well, I don't think so. Usually VM is used only as
hypervisor for Linux (VSE, z/OS), it rarely has data to share.
Ad hoc list of advantages and disadvantages of running z/OS under VM:
disadvantages:
- SW price. VM is not free.
- HW price. VM consumes resources (memory, CPU cycles, disk space).
- Lack of features: no multi-CPC sysplex, no dynamic HW reconfiguration
advantages:
- more virtual machines than PR/SM can offer (does anyone need >60 LPARs ?)
- better CPU adjustment for small systems (>3%)
- new systems can be added/deleted without POR. PR/SM provides some
functionality here, but much less flexible.
- system reboot without access to HMC.
