We had Skip's problem (although maybe not the original problem). If your freeze is synchronised with SMF/RMF interval, check II07124 - we added DDCONS(NO) to our SMF parms to resolve that problem (actually for us it was a 30 second freeze, although the APAR states 1-5 minutes).
