The system knows the architecture level (prior to z/OS 1.6 you would have determined this). The system defined the symbol. You defined the system name. The system defined the symbol. The system determined the sysres volume. The system defined the symbol. As to where you defined these things, it's a combination of various parmlib members such as LOADxx.
