No, it's not at all misleading (CA's prediction that 2009 shipped
incremental mainframe MIPS will exceed all installed mainframe MIPS in
2000). For at least one simple reason: nobody buys mainframe MIPS to let
them sit idle. They are the most highly utilized CPUs on the planet,
running an average of 80-plus percent busy for their entire lives. (And, if
anything, mainframe CPU percentage utilization has been trending upward
over time as customers get more sophisticated and more efficient.)
It's still not all true. Utilization is strictly related to pricing
model. The higher MIPS base installed the higher software fees. No other
platform worries about underutilization - because they don't pay for it.
I've got to admit that WLC changed it, but there are still plenty of
software paid by MIPS base, not by utilization.
BTW: Secretary's PC is still doing exactly the same work - it is as
idle/busy as it was 10 years ago. The MIPS base grew significantly.
From the other hand the mainframe ...is also doing the same job. Maybe
functionality changed, maybe number of customers grew up, but it can be
compared to new features in Office, etc. <vbg>
