Buzzzz... wrong answer. Like I said, if I preallocate the filesystem

C'mon, teacher!

Ah. Well, I was thinking of a script that Kevin Mullen of
US West (later Qwest) had for his organization. (I had a
copy and haven't been able to find it yet.) It was pretty
cool. The first time a TSO user issued "omvs", this script
would get control, allocate an HFS, add an omvs segment to
the user id, create the user directory, and issue a mount.
At least that's my recollection, but I haven't looked at
it in years.

Anyway, bear with me here. Remember, I'm an applications
guy, not a systems guy. I see this in the commands doc for
automount:

Restriction: The automount function requires the zFS file system to be a compatibility mode file system. zFS file systems in multi-file system aggregates will not work with automount.

Also, I don't see "delay 0" documented specifically; why not
take the default of 10 here? Similarly, you say "duration 0"
which seems to say: leave the file system mounted for at least
0 mintues. The default is "unlimited"; maybe somewhere in between
would be better? Finally, it is not clear from the docs if
the "type" parameter is case sensitive; if it is, you probably
need to specify zFS.

But, you're the systems guy so I presume you've gone over all
this prior to posting. It's just that those are the potential
issues that occur to me on reviewing the docs.
