A lot of the Websphere portfolio doesn't port well to z/OS.
I have anecdotal evidence (I was told by an IBMer) that
Websphere messaage broker runs like a stallion on AIX but
sucks big time on z/OS.
Not what I hear.
What do you hear? It's a speed demon ;)
Are you going to name the IBM name? :-)
Wish I could Timothy, but I don't want to be a dobber! What I will tell
you is that one of the big 4 retail banks in Australia were disappointed
with the performance of WMB. Maybe if they threw more iron at it it
might scale.
That's one of the reasons I've been exploring running
a web server under z/OS "lite".
That is, use one of the free HTTP servers available with
z/OS for the serving function: store HTML pages and other files
(pdf's, images, video, etc.) in the HFS and send on request;
Use COBOL for CGIs to create dynamic HTML, to access DB2, to
submit jobs, and so on.
Very low cost. Very low CPU impact.
But, of course, it requires a little "love" of z/OS UNIX:
some trust and willingness to roll your own.
On the other hand, avoid the high cost of WAS, both in
dollars and cycles; avoid unneeded complexity. Avoid the
use of Java when not needed. Use existing COBOL programmers.
Keep it simple.
Kind regards,
-Steve Comstock
