Actually, I always use it in client-server mode, with the client
(nc) and server (nedit -server) running on the same workstation. This
gives me only one instance of nedit no matter how many times I invoke
nc to open another file. (The client often gets renamed to nedit-client
to avoid clashing with the netcat nc.) And yes, it is way cool.
But I've never tried using it the way you suggested. I'll have to do
that sometime soon. I guess it ought to work like that - I'll have to
look into whether it uses inet or just local unix sockets. For
cross-machine use, I've just always used it like any other remote X
app.
Nedit has been ported to z/OS - I think it's in the Tools 'n Toys
collection. But sadly, like so many of these tools, the version is very
old - before tabs were introduced. And I haven't gotten around to
trying it.
Cheers,
Bob
