My humble opinion:
Don't try do share backup solution between distributed systems and
mianframe, unless one of the worlds is significantly smaller than the
other. "Enterprise class" solutions will be independent.

Exception: shared ATL robot. Only the robot, not drives. It can be easy
or quite cumbersome.

Last, but not least: those worlds (realms?) are usually managed by
independent teams, those teams don't speak any common language ;-)

BTW: FDR Upstream as well as Tantia do have option for LANless backup.
Data are transferred over disk channels.

BTW2: You worry about performance of Upstream + VTS. Don't you worry
about typical for distributed systems backup over LAN?

BTW3: I don't know the most popular backup product for distributed
systems, but I bet that Netbackup is in on the podium. The remaining two
are: IBM TSM and EMC (Legato) Networker.
Of course there are more: HP DP, CA (Cheyenne) ARCserve, Backup exec,
Backup Express, FDR Upstream, Tantia (BETA) Backup, etc. etc.
