There is no "the actual reserve"; there is a RESERVE macro and a
reserve CCW opcode. Neither is "a hardware feature on DASD". There
were shared DASD options in the OS and on the DASD controller, but
neither was called reserve.

For the last few decades there's also been the issue of multiple
allegiance.
