We recently experience an S878 abend in one of our HSM STCs. IBM is creating an apar OA40365 for this situation
The S878 occurred due to HSM not cleaning up the MVTs (Mounted Volume table) after completing migration to Tape. Temporary work around is to periodically cycle HSM. Our HSMs had been up for a couple of months. So you may not hit it if you cycle more often.
