Thanks for taking a shot to this one. While I gave a reply on HOW to get info, I did not think about IEBCOPY. You are 100% correct that compress is NOT for dir blocks. In such a case where directory blocks are nearly exhausted, I would just create a new PDS / PDSE with a larger dir blocks size and do a member copy job.
