There was another great tool for searching: Google Desktop. It happily
indexes PDFs and many other file types on a desktop machine, and
responds quickly, online or off. (It runs a tiny web server right on
your machine.) Much to my amazement, when I installed Windows 7 a year
or so ago, Google Desktop was gone - discontinued because "modern
desktop operating systems already have search built in". Sure - ever
tried to get Windows search to find anything with even slightly subtle
search arguments?

The funny part is that Google Desktop still works just fine if it's
already installed, and you can even install it on a new system, but
there's no more Google support. And of course who knows what security
holes there may be...
