John, No, each ACS routine can set only its corresponding read-write variable.
Do you have a statement in your DATACLAS routine that looks something like either of these? SET &DATACLAS = &DATACLAS SET &DATACLAS EQ &DATACLAS This would set the DATACLAS to whatever DATACLAS is specified on the JCL (unless the DATACLAS does not exist).
