No, each ACS routine can set only its corresponding read-write variable.  

Do you have a statement in your DATACLAS routine that looks something like 
either of these?   

 SET &DATACLAS = &DATACLAS   
 SET &DATACLAS EQ &DATACLAS   

This would set the DATACLAS to whatever DATACLAS is specified on the JCL 
(unless the DATACLAS does not exist).

Sorry I should have worded my question more clearly.  Since there is no rule 
for this DC (only a construct exists) does the SC or MC cause the allocation to 
occur?  In this case the dsn is being allocated by the DATACLAS LARGE which is 
correct.  I have re-read the ACS for all 4 but I couldn't find out how or what 
makes the DATACLAS be chosen by SMS.
