No, if you had ISO images, you needed to burn physical disks. Then
you would boot the special install disk, after issuing the
appropriate OpenBoot PROM command. And you needed to boot from a
CDROM drive that had a certain special capability, something that
most PC drives lacked. Even though this was supposedly an "Open
System", 1998 was still the era of closed hardware as far as Sun was
concerned.
I doubt the "special capability" of CDROM drive.
I believe it's just regular SCSI CDROM. It's much less popular than SATA
or IDE, but there is nothing special in the drive itself.
BTW: nowadays IDE CDROM has "special capability" and cannot be easily
bought in he market. The same with PS/2 keayboards, PS/2 mouses (mice?),
no chance to find COM (serial) connected mouse...
BTW: I do have SCSI CDROM drive, I can give it for free. It comes from
IBM equipment, but both IBM and Sun did not produced such devices (at
least for many years).
