>>I doubt the "special capability" of CDROM drive.
A bit of searching uncovered this statement from the Sun FAQ:
<<To ensure 100% compatibility on machines running Solaris 2.5.1 and
older, it is necessary to use a CD-ROM drive capable of supporting 512 byte
sectors (the Sun standard).>>
Although it says 2.5.1, I encountered this problem with 2.6. I think the
version of the OpenBoot PROM comes into play as well. I know the problem went
away with Solaris 8. Solaris 7 I just can't remember.
Plextor and Pioneer drives had this capability. I was trying to use HP SCSI-2
drives and they did not work. But an Apple SCSI drive pulled from an old
Quadra machine did the trick.
BTW, readers might be confused about the numbering of Solaris releases. For a
long time Sun was calling it SunOS 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, etc. But after 2.6 came
Solaris 7, then 8, 9, etc.. So today's Solaris 11 is really 2.11 in the old
scheme.
