We are writing an RMODE(64) product because we love z/OS and wish to help push the boundaries of its technological limitations wherever we can.

We had a design meeting about this and no one in attendance was able to come up with a significant disadvantage to RMODE(64) once we proved such modules would automatically be loaded RMODE(31) under z/OS 2.2. (At that time, we thought 2.2 might be our minimum supported release at GA, but that has since been bumped up to 2.3.)

RMODE(64) code is essentially indistinguishable from AMODE(64) code that happens to run RMODE(31).

This new product uses many advanced z/OS facilities. RMODE(64) is just one of them.

I believe the real reason for RMODE64 is Java
Db2 was a major influencer in the decision to allow execution above the bar...
