This sort of thing depends on the utility. For example,
AMATERSE PARM=UNPACK refuses to deal with //SYSUT1 DD PATH=...
But I can fool it with:
//SYSUT1 DD UNIT=SYSALLDA,SPACE=(TRK,0),RECFM=...
// DD PATH=...
And it works!
Go figger.
Some utilities make needless validity checks, then neglect to
check all catenands.
