A Systems Engineer does hardware work. They swap in/out memory. The put in and take out specialty engines (which are on cards these days), and the like.

The problem we have today is, COBOL programmers are being called Developers. Far cry from those of us that have been involved in product development where we had specific input into the manuals, built the install process (where possible, the customer could do an SMP/E install and then run a customization tool, etc.).

Oh, and we were expected to have system manuals so we could read how things worked and implement accordingly, as opposed to those who only want to be comfortable with COBOL and REXX, or just to refuse to read the mighty fine manuals.

So, in a few years with even more title inflation, we will be called Chief Programming Officers or some such silliness.

Just my $5 (hey, 40 years of inflation),
Steve Thompson

I'm currently in a 'discussion' with a manager type who wants to hire a
'Systems Engineer'. I have not been able to discern the difference. What
can a Systems Engineer do that a Systems Programmer cannot?

I toyed with a number of different titles but couldn't find one elegant and
imperial enough. So I borrowed from my trash man. Now I'm a Sanitation
Engineer.
