I also hate problems that disappear when I turn tracing or other diagnostics on.

Tsk. Tsk.  At times I have requested various tools on our systems, declined
because their presence might invalidate our tests.

And I recall a piece of vendor software that abended in production mode but
gave the result I intended in test mode.  SR.  "User error: RTFM.  You're
using something documented as 'unpredictable'."  Correct, but too
unpredictable for my taste.
