Just stumbled upon this thread and can't resist a comment or two.
In 1971 I went from "correspondence" training to 3 months "intensive training"
at the College of Automation in Jacksonville FL... Yep, Now I know that was a
pure scam, but I did learn how to wire accounting machines, code in RPG and
even a bit in COBOL. When I finished, I was the top 5% of the whole class. Not
that it meant much, but I didn't know any better at the time...
With my certificates of "completion" and being the top 5%, I went out applying
for a job. And I got hired to be a computer operator on an IBM 360/30! The rest
of the story is probably boring, bur I have really enjoyed my life as an
"original" geek and happy to be retired now, but still writing code for my own
use.
