My old site used to name modules as:
 MODULE$ - new version
 MODULE# - current version
 MODUEL@ - old version

The new module was linked in to the library as MODULE$ then 
to install a few renames (interactive or batch):
  MODULE# -> MODULE@
  MODULE$ -> MODULE#
and restart the effected process.

backing it out was the reverse...
