Also, my understanding is that EXCP is not supported to extended format 
datasets.

If it uses a normal OPEN for the data set then it will see the clear text data. 
I am interested to know if there is a way to see the encrypted data. Seeing the 
encrypted form of the data provides a method to demonstrate that data is 
encrypted. The only tool I have to do this at the moment is using the DSS PRINT 
function.
