FWIW, I had access to a 029 keypunch into the late 80's. Didn't use it myself,
but I had access...

My previous comment about "more recently (a few decades perhaps)" seems to have
triggered some thoughts among various responders. I can definitely say that any
programming I accomplished that involved using a keypunch for input does not
qualify as "recent"! (My "older" experience (1620, 1410, 7040, etc,
etc) is definitely not recent in my thoughts! Even more modern terminals, such
as 2260s, are not quite in the "recent" category.
Nevertheless, I do believe that using lower case can, as a minimum, make
comments more readable. And I do recognize that more "modern" technology (such
as UNIX and all the things it has spawned) seems to depend on lower case to the
extent that upper case usage appears almost incorrect.
And, yes, I do believe that relegating keypunches to "ancient history" was a
good move. A nice, simple 3270 emulator on a basic PC is definitely an
improvement!
Should JCL accept lower case? IMHO, that is a more complex issue than one might
first expect -- especially in "production" situations.
