Well, it looks like the worst possible outcome. The problem simply went away.
The program runs in four "phases" of processing. I put an exit()
after the first phase, to see if the problem was there. No error. I
moved the exit to after the second phase. No error. Ditto the third
and fourth. Then I took the exit out entirely (leaving the
appropriate return statement) and the problem had disappeared. No
other changes other than cleaning up some comments. I was testing
with REGION=6M (as some suggested). Just to see if that made the
critical difference, I went back to REGION=0M. The problem has vanished.
I don't know whether to be relieved or terrified.
I guess if it comes back I will cross that bridge when I come to it.
