Well, that's the thing, now, isn't it? IBM claims to be all in on AI, like everyone else, to the point of building Telum on-chip acceleration. But we still don't see people using AI on Z for real. Doesn't mean it's not happening, but you'd think by now someone would be talking about it?!
My concern is that Z MIPS are too expensive. Yes, there's conceivably some advantage in having the data "close", but given the amount of processing needed, and the size of the LLM, I'm guessing that folks who need AI processing on Z data are finding it more reasonable to have the LLM on x86 and just move the real-time data over a fast pipe. I'd love to see some data to the contrary--that's data, not anecdotes/belief/wishes! ...phsiii P.S. The line was "Shall we play a game?" -- see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1F7vaNP9w0 ObAnecdote: In the mid-70s, when I was but a wee lad in my teens, my dad would bring a terminal home from University of Waterloo and let me play games* on VM/370 over blazing-fast 300bps dialup. I mentioned this to a friend--a smart guy, but far from academia or technology--and he asked me what the computer's voice sounded like! I tried to explain that it was all text-based, but as I recall, he didn't really get it. I blame Star Trek for that, and while there was plenty of keyboarding in War Games, WOPR's voice didn't help dispel that myth, I'm sure! And only now, 50 years later, is it more or less reality. *STARTREK, LANDER, SUMER... -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Mike Shaw Sent: Monday, June 22, 2026 3:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: AI on the mainframe On Mon, Jun 22, 2026 at 1:18 PM Edgington, Jerry < [email protected]> wrote: > Want to play a game?? > <[email protected]> Number of players: 0 > > Mike Shaw MVS/QuickRef Support Group ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
